Sometimes the best crafts are wonderful printables available online.
One of our favorites is the "Amazing Incredible Handwriting Worksheet Maker" at Handwriting Worksheets. Since my daughter is entering Kindergarten soon, we like to use the one which allows us to generate our own page with lots of lines to practice. I can type in any short sentence or series of words and then we print them out. Part of the fun is making up sheets with family names or made-up words. There are also cursive sheets for older kids. It's a lot more fun to make up your own sentences, than to just write the words in books... and the best part is that it's FREE.
